New subcategory

Tuesday, June 6th, 2006

Since my switch to SuSE is probably going to be a significant part of what I write on here in the future, I’ve decided to give it its own subcategory. Why ‘Linux’ and not ‘SuSE’? Because I’m watching Ubuntu very closely – despite its problems (like WPA), most of which are Debian’s fault (WPA support was screwed through Debian removing it from the boot sequence or something… don’t know any of the jargon yet), I have a feeling that by the next release (Edgy Eft, December 2006) Ubuntu could be very, very good indeed.

SuSE 10.1

Monday, June 5th, 2006

Well, the reason for the distinct lack of posting over the last few days is that I have been setting up a Windows XP/SuSE 10.1 dual boot. After some gnashing of teeth over WPA, I finally found an ethernet cable and was able to connect to my router (and download the necessary packages in SuSE) that way. Now I see what all the fuss is about. As well as all the security, stability etc. gains, SuSE is actually more polished than Windows XP. Of course Windows has its good points (hence the dual boot) – chief among which is the fact that, entertaining diversion though SuperTux is, I cannot run any of my games on SuSE.

That’s not the SuSE developers’ fault of course, but a dual boot is perfect – I can use each OS for the tasks it is best at.

The Deputy Leader of the Labour Party has finally given up his taxpayer-funded country mansion, but can I ask why his salary is still coming from the public purse, since his job is essentially a Labour Party one rather than a public one.
